A Trip Down Memory Lane

Standard

I’ve neglected my blogging lately due to a trip down memory lane.  No car needed.  Just a lot of time, some physical labor, and a patient family.  Garage sale mania has hit our household.

We have been putting boxes away marked “garage sale” for over a year.  So as we unpack these treasure boxes, we hop on board memory lane.  Remember when he got that for his birthday?  Oh, that was my favorite dress on her at that age!  Wow, I still cannot believe that we got that for a wedding present.  Gee, that was a bargain when we got it back 8 years ago.  And the sentiments go on.

Also heading for memory lane are boxes that my parents have lovingly stowed away since I left for college.  A cool 20 years ago, yikes!  These tubs cause lingering thoughts (Thoughts of, I used to collect that!  Or wow, that is surely the essence of the 80s.), quick tears, and many additional hours of labor.  Their basement has been a “free” storage haven for the last 30 years for the 4 “J” kids.  What will become of that space?  Time will only tell.

Tomorrow at precisely 9:00, the garage door will open and memory lane will be up for sale.

Oh and a lemonade stand, what kid hasn’t had a garage sale lemonade stand?!

Emergency Fund

Standard

Oh emergency fund.   How do I love the?  Let me count the ways.
Van broken down and needs a new fly wheel and window mechanics.
Septic pump alarm is ringing.  Something is amiss.  The pump is out.
To get to the pump, rip out part of the deck.  Now what?
92 degrees, turn on central air.  Needs freon.
TV meets toddler, mishap.  Replacement needed.
Koi pond is green and hazy.  Pump and pond clean out on the horizon.
Sometimes when it rains, it pours.  But thankfully we have a slush fund.
Do you have yours up to date?

Windex Moment

Standard

Do you remember “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”?  In it, Toula’s dad, Gus, was convinced that Windex cured anything.  “Put some Windex on it,” he would say.

Last week as I finished up my son’s birthday cake, I discovered that my hands, fingers, and nails were various shades of R2D2.  In an attempt to scrub them clean, I tried plain old soap, a scrub pad, nail brush, dish soap, and even Comet with Bleach, the powdered kind.  In the end, my hands were slightly less colorful, but still looked like my hands were in a tie dye gone bad experiment.  I gave up my quest for regaining stain-free phalanges and tidied up the kitchen.  As I grabbed the Windex bottle, Gus spoke to me, teased me to give it a try.  3 squirts later and a scrub with the Windex laden nail brush, spotless.

Gus made a Windex believer out of me.

Insect bites, scrapes, burns, the list goes on…

Sundae Monday

Standard

Today was the first day of our summer schedule craziness:

8:30-10:00 Tennis

11:00 Lunch

12:00 – 1:30 Older two and papa head to the pool for swim and play fun

2:00 Rest time for older two

2:30 Littlest guy’s 2 year well child in Kalamazoo

3:00 Chores and school work time

4:30 Dinner

5:30 Swim lessons

6:30 A much-needed Sundae break at J.J’s Shiver Shack.  $10.02 scored us a kid’s size scoop of cake batter, a kid size candy play dough (After hearing the name, I should not have agreed to a taste!), a regular root beer float, a Dora ice cream head, and a medium twist in a cone.  Not bad for an evening out.  We did consider heading to the nearby McDonald’s for ice cream and could have saved $4.00.  But our family loves to support local businesses and enjoy the opportunity to visit with our high school students.  Too bad the miniature golf is closed for the season.  Shiver Shack has the only mini-golf in town and will be sorely missed for our once a year round.

7:00  Library park and a stroll along the Kalamazoo river board walk.

What an awesome start to the week!

Anniversary Dinner Adventure

Standard

For evening out, we decided to do a culinary whirlwind of Saugatuck/Douglas.  Little did we know that the Waterfront Film Festival was going on and provided great people watching and plenty of live music venues.

We started our evening at Wild Dog Grille located in the quaint town of Douglas.  Along with a glass of wine, we enjoyed our Mussel and Shrimp Appetizer.  The fennel and garlic wine broth was the perfect accompaniment to the large shrimp and tasty mussels.  We especially liked the cilantro pesto crostini.  The flavorful broth lapped up by the crostini was a great way to start our foodie evening.  My two tiny complaints would be that the crostini were slightly over charred giving off a faint bitter taste and the mussels were quite small and lacking in numbers. But they were flavorful and worth the stop in Douglas.  Perhaps Everyday People Cafe would have been another stop, but with EPC not opening until 5:30 and it was now 4:45, we did not want to wait around.  Maybe next time.

Next up was a little downtown Saugatuck stroll and shopping.  After the rain storm rolled through, the 90 degree temp dropped to a pleasant 76 degrees.  Perfect weather for window shopping.  Our favorite place to wander about is Landshark’s.  We love to check out the latest shoe styles from Merrell, Keen, and many more, not to mention the newest clothes from Patagonia, Columbia, to name a few.  Our next main stop is the Butler Pantry.  If I could register for my next birthday or Christmas, I would register here.  My poor husband was only able to get me out with a promise of good food.  We lingered in a few more shops before heading for dinner.

A few months back, we did a Saturday stroll through Saugatuck with the kids ending with lunch at Phil’s Bar and Grille.  We were so impressed with the service, atmosphere, and especially the food, that we knew a return trip was needed.  Upon arrival, we found out that we were in for a 2 hour wait.  We decided to wait it out.  The bar area was 3 people deep, but we managed to slide into the 2nd position and minutes later to seats at the bar.  20 minutes at the most.  A few other couples lucky enough to snag bar seats also promptly decided that bar seat dining was in order and we followed suit.  I knew from my predinner web search that I wanted the Scallop Pad Thai.  The dish was exactly what I expected, a little heat, flavorful broccolini, shiitake mushrooms, and slivers of red peppers, and then the scallops.  Here lies my only disappointment.  The scallops, supposedly the star of the plate, had no seasoning and were not seared whatsoever.  They looked like large water chestnuts rather than succulent scallops.  I hoping that the extremely busy night was the reason for the lack of attention need for great scallops.  My husband’s Lamp Lollipops also were lacking seasoning on the protein.  However the Shiitake Spinach Risotto made up for the lack of seasoning on the perfectly cooked lamp chops.  If we had not been at a restaurant, I do believe my husband would have licked his platter clean!

Next we wandered around looking for the perfect spot to take in one of the many live bands and to have a black apple.  We ended up at the outside seating area of Coral Gables.  After a few songs and a lovely sunset over the marina, we were ready to move on for dessert.

We liked the sound vibes coming from White House Bistro and decided on a seat on the patio.  Their dessert menu was lacking.  Consisting of only a Walnut Apple Pie a la mode and Strawberry Shortcake a la mode, we ordered one of each along with a warm Kahlua and coffee.  The pie and shortcake were good, not great by any stretch of the imagination.  But the band, atmosphere, and overall people watching, made up for the lack luster desserts.

Happy Birthday!

Standard

A very happy birthday to our little shocker.  Yes, we were content with our little girl and older brother.  A child for each adult, ahh, we had it made.  Made, easy.  Then we decided to sell our remaining baby items and were looking to upgrade our family’s camper.  The rest as they say, is history.

A few months later, we found out we were expecting #3.  His arrival was an emotional time as we had to put down our first “kid”, our beagle Bella, on the very same day.  Some cultures believe that when an animal or human dies, its spirit is released and passed on to an animal just entering the world.  Wow, Bella sure speaks to us with our little guy.  As any beagle owner knows, they are determined, loving, happy, and always on the move.  Bella passed on the best of herself, as her presence is always with us.

Since we were in the process of RV shopping for our dream trip out West, little #3, was appropriately given the initials R.V.  Just as an RV conjures up feelings of adventure, fun seeking, and the ability to be “on the go”, so does our R.V.  He reminds us that there is always something to explore, life to get out and live, and happiness to spread.

Joke on us, 2 kids easy peasy.  3 kids?  A dream trip and lesson in all the best things in life; love, laughter, and a reminder that sometimes someone else is in control.

Happy 2nd Birthday RV!  These 2 years have brought us such joy and life!

Thank you to all that follow my many musings, ramblings, tidbits.  Whether its at the store, on the phone, or through an email, I appreciate all the positive vibes.  Your wonderful words inspire me to keep on writing.

Now that summer is upon us, I imagine having more time to blog, but instead find myself busy pulling weeds, floating in the pool, or cuddling with kids.  It is my goal to carve a little more time reading and blogging…just a few moments of me time.

Thanks again!  Check back often!

I'll admit that I drove here tonight to get a slice of Mama's pizza. But, when I walked in the door a friendly lady inquired,

"Are you here for Mama's or Ron's?"

The ladies entering ahead of me bee-lined for the pizza. I felt a little guilty dosing out more rejection so I redirected my belly. Usually, we have Mama's delivered, so, I hadn't realized the two restaurants share a building.

Sometimes a stomach just drives the car. Since pulled pork is my weakness, we managed to twist our way into visiting the first family. First family because they are godparents to 2 of our children and due to it's usually the first on the list when we talk about who we want to visit. After drooling through this post, I was longing for a Wilmington road trip. How awesome that later in the week, dear husband said he was hankering for some first family time! Yes! Barefoot Rose was spot on! The pulled pork was every bit worth the 3 hour drive; succulent, flavorful, and let me not forget about the sides! The beans were tangy, had a tad of a kick, and a hint of celery seed (my favorite for good bbq). Then came the slaw, I am a pulled pork topped with slaw kind of gal. The slaw, house-made as is everything else, was creamy without too much, crunchy, and just a refreshing accompaniment to the tangy bbq sauce. Sorry Barefoot Rose, but we may just crash again so I can try the pulled chicken next time! For $19.99 we got a pound of said pork, 4 oz of bbq sauce (mild or spicy), 2 Lg. sides (beans, mac n cheese), and buns.  A great option for our family of 5!  Reasonably priced, perfect location (next to a park), and worth the gas money!

Friday Freebie – Picnic in the Park

Standard

A few years ago my mother gave each family a Reisenthel market basket for Christmas.  Our basket is always stocked and ready for our next adventure.  It is preloaded with paperware, plastic ware, napkins/wipes, bug spray, sun lotion, snacks, and juice boxes.  At any given moment, I can grab it and know that it has the essentials for a road trip, picnic, or night away.  The important thing I have learned is to restock it when returning from an outing.  This is key to happy adventuring!

Today’s freebie is a picnic in a park, any park or backyard!  We threw together some sandwiches, literally the kids crammed things between two slices of bread, and within 10 minutes were out the door.  Our small town has many enjoyable picnic locations in the city and outlined areas to enjoy on a whim.  We decided to dine at a local skateboard, children’s park hotspot – JayCee Park along the Kalamazoo River.  The park was hopping!  Skateboarding, softball throw and catch, a company luncheon, a daycare outing, and numerous families out for a summer’s day enjoyment.  We sat along the river watching fish jump, listen to distant boat motors, and soaked in the sun’s warm rays.  The only vacant spot was the dog park, probably too hot for the mutts today.

My oldest said that we should try to “hit up” as many parks as we can this summer.  Great minds do think alike!

Traditional S'mores meet S'more' with a Twist in today's 5 Minute Recipe: Twisted S'mores!

As a huge fan of the s'more, I understand 2 things; 1. That a campfire and/or grill, is not always available.  2. To limit s'more's as just a Summer snack would be completely unfair to the other seasons.
