Traditions

Standard

Each family has its own traditions or experiences that define who it is as a unit.  Our family lives for movie night, family dinner talks, play fights, Nerf wars, exploring the great outdoors, and camping.  This weekend we will travel to our Mecca, the Grand Rapids Camper & RV Show.

Five years ago with a one year old in tow, we scoured the rows, inspected the units, and debated the features of each small size travel trailer.  Our hearts set, pocket-book in hand, we picked out an 18 foot Hybrid Travel Star.  If I sound like Tim the Tool Man talking about his latest gadget or a kid in a candy store, it is only because camping is the “thing” that gets our blood pumping and hearts a glowing.

We love our little trailer.  Oh the campsites we visited, the glorious sunsets we watched, the hours of laughter that rang out, and peaceful campfires we enjoyed while traveling in our little camper.  Now that camper is bulging at the seams.  Five bodies at sleep, no problem!  But five active bodies inside on a blustery, rainy day, no way!  Our budget is set for a few years and a camper is not on the horizon, but that won’t stop us from getting our camp on.

Our dream is to spend a summer camping our way across this great land, exploring National Parks, sleeping under the stars, and just having the time of our lives.  At the ages of 5, 3, and 1 our children are not ready for this grand adventure and our camper is not equipped for the long haul.  But for tonight, we will dream and enjoy what has become our tradition; exploring the nooks and crannies of the simplest of pop-ups to the most automated, luxurious RVs, all the while dreaming and planning our greatest adventure.

Traditions, the little moments and events that define each family.  What’s yours?

  1. You might be interested in robillardadventures.com. They are former GR teachers that packed it all in and now live in their RV travelling the country. Be careful, it just might give you ideas.
