Halloween fright

What scares me the most on Halloween is the amount of money people dump into costumes! All together for three costumes, our family total was under $8. We borrowed or repurposed. We crafted and tinkered. Batman?

No cost, all items on hand.
Hello Kitty?
A clearance tutu at Meijers $3, an old shirt $0, and felt sheets $0.60.

Harry Potter?
No problem. A shirt in Griffindor colors $0, a borrowed Griffindor robe and scarf $0, and a broom from home.

A small face paint kit for Kitty and a scar, $3.99.

Priceless, not overpriced, fun.

Money changes everything

Walking the dog one morning, I jammed along to Cyndi Lauper’s “Money Changes Everything” chorus. So true!

Money changes everything
Money, money changes everything
We think we know what we’re doin’
That don’t mean a thing
It’s all in the past now
Money changes everything

I am glad that our family is able to find joy in the little (frugal) things, live with limited labels, and openly talk about money.  After all, it changes everything.

Puke, clean, craft. Repeat

While home with an ill child, I was bored. There is only so much cleaning, tv watching, reading this girl can do. As my youngest napped off and on, I disinfected, cleaned, and crafted. Nothing fancy since clearly I would need to jump at a moments gag or moan.

Six hours later, things are disinfected, crafts completed, and I am relaxed.

Artisan bread take two

Following the success of the 5 minute bread, today I pulled out the remaining 1 1/2 pounds of refrigerated dough. With sick kids milling about, I mixed 3 Tablespoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and a handful each of raisins and chocolate chips and kneaded it into the dough.

425 degrees and 35 minutes later, our house smells like a bakery and all are awaiting the taste test.

Pinterest is addicting. So much so that my arts and crafts room is beginning to look like my grandma’s post WWII era cupboards. Egg cartons, tin cans, toilet rolls, plastic of any kind. I save every little bit for the next Pinterest day. The crafts counter is littered with half projects awaiting the arrival of items to complete the projects. I’m a Pinterest hoarder and I’m okay with that.
